On 15 August, our Yr 10 and 11 students’ passion for STEM was clearly evident through everyone’s prompt arrival for a 7.45am departure to Canberra. As students departed the miserable grey skies of Sydney, they were quickly welcomed by clear blue ones most suitable for that unique day away from college!
Under the supervision of Westbourne’s STEM educators Alicia Vallero, Dr Lusha Kodikara and Dr Poker Chen, they ventured off on the college’s first interstate excursion to the great capital for the GSG STEM Expo at the Great Hall of Parliament House. During this expo, students had the chance to interact with scientists, engineers, technologists, mathematicians and researchers all involved in solving some of Australia’s biggest STEM challenges. One of the most memorable encounters was with the Australian prototype “Roover”!
A visit to the great capital wouldn’t be complete, though, without a visit to the Questacon! After a short lunch break by Lake Burley Griffith – and who could forget, under the sunny blue skies – our students spent the rest of the afternoon uncovering the mysteries of science first-hand.
