Future Innovators at Westbourne: ADF STEM Award Winners Aidan and Emmanuel

Two Westbourne College Sydney students have been recognised with the ADF Future Innovators Award for outstanding achievement in STEM. Read their stories and aspirations.

Two Westbourne College Sydney students, Aidan Williams (DP2) and Emmanuel Koutsouklakis (Year 10), have been recognised with the ADF Future Innovators Award, a national award that celebrates outstanding achievement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The award highlights the value the Australian Defence Force places on STEM capability and future STEM career pathways in the Navy, Army and Air Force. For Aidan and Emmanuel, it’s also a powerful acknowledgement of their curiosity, persistence and passion for STEM learning at Westbourne.

What is the ADF Future Innovators Award?

The ADF Future Innovators Award is presented to students who show exceptional ability in science and mathematics, as well as a strong interest in STEM problem-solving and innovation. It aims to encourage young people to continue their STEM studies and consider future careers in defence, engineering, technology and research.

At Westbourne College Sydney, a selective IB senior school with a strong focus on STEM and Business, this recognition aligns closely with our mission: to develop capable, curious and confident young people who can use STEM to solve real-world problems.

“STEM is a powerful career pathway” – Aidan Williams (DP2)

For DP2 student Aidan Williams, receiving the ADF Future Innovators Award confirms that he’s on the right path with his STEM studies.

“I feel that it’s really exciting to have my interest in the sciences acknowledged with the ADF Future Innovators Award, and it’s a reminder to me that STEM is a powerful career pathway with the opportunity to both make a difference and satisfy my curiosity. I feel privileged to have my strength in this area acknowledged by such a major institution in our society.”

What excites Aidan most about STEM education is not just one subject, but the way different disciplines connect and reinforce each other.

“I think that the best thing about STEM is that it is inherently interdisciplinary – the skills that I learn analysing mathematics or physics could easily be turned to computing or engineering.”

As an IB Diploma student at Westbourne, Aidan has been able to explore advanced concepts in physics and mathematics, while also building the research, critical thinking and communication skills that universities look for. Looking ahead, he is excited by the breadth of opportunity that a STEM pathway offers.

“As a school graduate, I’m looking forward to a broad-based exploration of many STEM areas, but with a particular focus in physics – I love its combination of empiricism and mathematical elegance!”

This blend of real-world experimentation and deep theoretical understanding is what draws many students into STEM degrees and research.

Aidan’s future plans reflect this mindset:

“In the future, I picture myself as someone who engineers solutions to problems, but not necessarily as a person whose job title includes the word ‘engineer’. Aspiring to take a Bachelor of Science, I’d like to pursue a broad variety of career pathways to utilise an engineering and STEM problem-solving mindset. I’m still young, so I feel that I retain a wonderfully broad choice of sub-specialties.”

Aidan’s comments show exactly what Westbourne aims to develop through its IB STEM program: young people who can use scientific thinking and problem-solving skills in many different career contexts.

“Seeing simple ideas become real products” – Emmanuel Koutsouklakis (Year 10)

For Year 10 student Emmanuel Koutsouklakis, the ADF Future Innovators Award is both recognition and motivation.

“To me, the reward is an acknowledgement of all the effort I’ve put in over the year, reinforcing that my dedication to STEM has a real impact. More importantly, it also serves as a reminder to continue learning and tackle new challenges.”

Emmanuel is especially drawn to the practical, hands-on side of STEM, where ideas become tangible outcomes.

“The most inspiring part of STEM for me is seeing simple ideas get turned into real, meaningful products. I especially enjoy projects involving PCB design, and being able to see my work go from a file on a computer to a physical circuit board in a matter of weeks.”

His interests sit at the intersection of electronics, engineering and technology, areas where Australia – and Defence – have strong and growing demand for skilled professionals.

Looking ahead, Emmanuel wants to deepen his knowledge of advanced electronics:

“My current goals are to become more familiar with modern high-speed electronics and the physical limitations that come with them. I want to keep building my skills so I can eventually work alongside other engineers on larger-scale projects than I could tackle on my own.”

This forward-looking view captures a key aspect of STEM education at Westbourne: helping students move from classroom theory to real-world applications, and then on to collaborative, large-scale problem-solving.
