A Day in the Life of Zoe (IB1)
On the 5th of June 2021, Westbourne College Sydney completed our first day of Labs.
It was an early 8:30 start to the day and the first subject to run was Chemistry with Dr K. We did a titration experiment; I personally discovered the importance of accurately following the method of the experiment or else the solution will come out the wrong colour. As a class we were aiming for a very light pink or peach colour. The first time I did the experiment it came out a hot pink, but after a few more tries my partner and I finally got the result we were hoping for. I found the experience very rewarding because despite the setbacks, in the end we were able persevere and complete the titration with a light shade of pink. The shade of success.
The next subject was Biology which I’m not studying as part of my IB Diploma. So, I along with a few other students who study both Chemistry and Physics had a 3-hour gap to fill. We decided to go and see the movie, ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ which we all enjoyed.

The next experiment was on Hooke’s Law, AKA the spring constant. We all broke off into small groups and completed the experiment by hanging a spring up and then putting weights on the end of it, so we could then measure how much the spring extended based on how much weight was placed on the spring.
Next, we made our own parachutes out of plastic garbage bags, attached weights to the bottom, and then dropped them off a staircase. It was a competition of who’s parachute would stay airborne for the longest. Unfortunately, with the parachute I crafted, one of the strings attached to the weight broke, which in turn, caused the top of my parachute to close and drop like a rock when the time came to test them all out.
After this exciting lab, we got locked inside of the campus, as all the gates but one was locked, but eventually, we found our way out.
All in all, it was a successful day of labs and a very fun day.
