This term, we were given the opportunity to hear from Dr. Rebecca Duncan, an incredible polar marine biologist. Through her wide range of experience, she shared insights into her research on climate change’s impact on marine food webs and the challenges of working in extreme polar environments.
Dr Duncan, Rebecca, led us through her STEM pathway, including the various different opportunities she took as well as the many challenges she faced, especially as a woman in this industry. She was an inspiration to many of us, highlighting the importance of perseverance with STEM and the opportunities available, as a woman in a male-dominated field.
We learnt about how valuable mentorship, collaboration and connections are for our future careers, particularly as gender equality in STEM continues to be an ongoing issue. Rebecca has inspired us to challenge stereotypes and strive for change.
This talk not only broadened our understanding of marine biology but also showcased the diverse opportunities in STEM beyond the classroom. Dr. Duncan’s passion and advocacy left a lasting impact, inspiring us to explore careers in science.
