With many Year 11 (DP1) students having their Learner licenses, soon to be P1, and some even there already, it is imperative to be aware of the dangers on the road, and more importantly, the vitality of driving safely.

On the Tuesday of Week 5 in Term 3, DP1 (Year 11) students made their way to Sydney Olympic Park to learn about these exact things in a program known as BStreetSmart. Lots of schools attended the event, which first started off with introductions, followed with an accurate representation of the dangers of driving under the influence and what the exact procedure is when an accident occurs, what the civilians on the scene should do, and what the police, firefighters, and paramedics do from the moment they arrive at the scene to when patients reach the ER and those breaking the law reach the police department.

Afterwards, students got a break, where they were given the opportunity to take to the floor of the stadium to check out the different departments’ vehicles and ask questions from the professionals in these fields, as well as do fun activities such as wheelchair basketball!

Once sat back down, students got very serious talks about the importance of making good decisions regarding road safety, and the everlasting consequences of accidents that happen as a result of driving under the influence, from those who have been unfortunate enough to have to experience these impacts themselves.

This has been an invaluable day and acts as a great reminder for us all to take care on the roads, not just for ourselves but also for our loved ones.
