Remember that unpleasant experience of waking up in the morning, checking the weather, and changing multiple outfits to only turn out wearing something that might not be such a great match with the physical atmosphere? The numbers that are recorded at the closest weather station may be quite different from the numbers on the street – the difference may even grow as the day, or night, evolves. So, how much can we rely on weather forecasts?
During National Science Week, our Year 10 students will decode the universe and dip into the science of weather patterns and variations. Arming themselves with a student-designed monitoring device, they will take these home to record the temperatures, humidity and air pressures across Sydney. The official BoM measurements and forecasts will also be recorded. After National Science Week, the class will come together with their findings to graph the measurements at the LGA level, and compare the device records with the BoM forecasts.
